Art That Speaks
Immerse yourself in the stories and internal world of the ethnic groups of Northern Vietnam through Dave Lang's art collections on handmade paper, lectures, and multimedia work.
Each artwork expresses the subtle interplay of interpersonal dynamics. In other words, it's dressed up gossip.

About
I was born in a small town in the northeastern United States, not far outside Boston. Since then, I've been a working artist around the United States, Germany, South Korea, and, currently, in Southeast Asia.
The concrete subjects of my art are drawn from my time in the north of Vietnam and feature ethnic groups like the Hmong and Dao. Within this prescribed boundary, I'm interested in the psychological depth that is revealed in storytelling: the last argument you had with your father, teaching your child how to walk, minding a vegetable stall at a local market with your younger sister, sitting with friends in a restaurant, getting your younger sibling to eat, etc.

Exhibitions
I've had an amazing time showcasing my work in exhibitions across Southeast Asia, North America, and Europe. Each one centered around the art of handmade paper and celebrated the Hmong and other ethnic groups from the highlands of Vietnam. I'm really proud that a percentage of all the proceeds goes to charities that help these communities in northern Vietnam.
Stay tuned for my next one coming around the corner - my favorite one is always the next one!

Facing North (XYZ Artspace) This exhibition focused on the distinct physiognomy of various ethnic groups in Vietnam. 100% of the proceeds were donated to The Blue Dragon Children's Charity.

Explorations in Character (SOMA) This exhibition featured a small selection of works and explored individual portraiture and the connection between audiences and subjects being obvserved.

Hmong Smile (The Workshop) My most ambitious exhibition at the time was an interactive multimedia gallery that further explored the identity of modern ethnic groups and their evolving interpersonal relationships.

6 Hmong (Annam Gallery) This small group exhibition focused on a smaller range of subjects and explored the ancient roots of the Hmong in Vietnam.

Family (The Workshop) My most recent exhibition tackles the concept of family and explores the positive aspects of generations interacting with each other in an evolving modern setting.
